The best protein shakes on Ozempic: what to look for

On Ozempic a shake is the easiest 25 to 40 g of protein you will get all day, because drinking is far easier than chewing on a small appetite. Look for 25 g or more of protein per serve, under 5 g of sugar, and no sugar alcohols such as sorbitol or maltitol, which tend to make nausea and wind worse. Whey isolate is the easiest on a queasy stomach; a pea and rice blend is the plant option that still covers the amino acids you need.

Your number, before anything else

Protein is what decides whether the weight you lose is fat or muscle. Work your number out once and we will keep it with you on every page here. No account, no email.

Why shakes do more work on a GLP-1 than they used to

A 150 g (5 oz) chicken breast is 45 g of protein and about twenty minutes of chewing you may not have in you. The same 45 g mixed into 300 ml (10 fl oz) of milk takes ninety seconds and goes down when nothing else will. On semaglutide the appetite drop tends to work like a dimmer switch rather than an on-off: meals feel possible but small, and fullness arrives early and stays. Most people we coach on Ozempic can eat a modest plate, then nothing for hours. That is the whole case for shakes here: they are not better food, they are food you will actually finish.

The stakes are the reason we push it. Pooled across 20 randomised trials, 35.2% of the weight lost on semaglutide was lean mass, against 26.2% when the same weight came off by diet alone, and 17.5% when resistance training was added. Most people we coach who fall short of their protein target miss by 20 to 40 g a day, which is one shake. Closing that gap is often the difference between a strength test that holds and one that slides for a month.

On Ozempic most people find a shake goes down easily on days four to seven after the injection, when the effect has eased. Front-load your shakes into the days you can drink them rather than fighting the first two.

How to choose and use one this week

  1. Read the protein per serve, not the protein per 100 g

Scoops vary from 25 g to 40 g of powder. Aim for a serve that delivers 25 g or more of protein. If the label says 80 g protein per 100 g of powder and the scoop is 30 g, you are getting 24 g, not 80 g.

  2. Avoid sugar alcohols and very high fibre on a queasy stomach

Sorbitol, maltitol, xylitol and inulin are common in low-sugar shakes and they are the most reliable way to turn mild nausea into wind and cramping on Ozempic. Sucralose or stevia sit better for most people we coach.

  3. Mix with milk when you can tolerate it

250 ml (8.5 fl oz) of dairy milk adds about 8 g of protein and makes the shake a meal rather than a top-up. Lactose-free milk has the same protein. Soy milk is the plant milk that comes close at about 7 g; almond milk is about 1 g and adds nothing.

  4. Drink it when appetite is highest, not when you are full

For most people that is the morning, or the day before the next dose. A shake at 10am beats a shake at 9pm that you sip half of.

  5. Match the shake to the week

Ozempic peaks one to three days after the injection. Use a thinner shake mixed with water or lactose-free milk on those days, and the thicker yoghurt version later in the week when you can handle volume.

Three shakes that hit 30 g or more

  • Simple: 30 g scoop whey isolate in 250 ml (8.5 fl oz) milk, about 33 g protein, roughly 220 calories (920 kJ)
  • Breakfast in a glass: 200 g (7 oz) Greek yoghurt, 150 ml (5 fl oz) milk, half a banana, one scoop, about 45 g
  • Plant: 35 g pea and rice blend in 250 ml (8.5 fl oz) soy milk with a tablespoon of peanut butter, about 34 g
  • Ready to drink, for travel days: pick one with 25 g or more per bottle and under 5 g of sugar

Any of these covers a third of a typical daily target in one go. Whole food first when you can manage it; a shake beats a missed meal every time.

Forty foods, ranked by protein per bite

The hard part is not knowing you need protein on Ozempic, it is hitting the number on a day when food is the last thing you want. One page, grams and ounces, what a real serve looks like, and the first-bite rule for when appetite is gone. Print it and put it on the fridge.

Then five short emails over five days on keeping muscle while the weight comes off, and a short note every fortnight after that if you want it. One click to stop, any time.

Worth a conversation with your prescriber

  • Any kidney or liver condition, since protein targets may need adjusting for you specifically
  • Shakes that reliably trigger vomiting, severe bloating or diarrhoea rather than settling within a week
  • Whether a particular product suits you if you have diabetes, coeliac disease or a food allergy

Dose and timing on Ozempic are your prescriber's decisions; we coach the food and the strength.

The three numbers that tell you what you are keeping

A shake is worth adding only if it moves the weekly numbers. These are the three to watch.

  1. One strength test, same way every week

Goblet squat reps at a fixed weight, push-ups, or the 30-second sit-to-stand for beginners. Fat loss does not make you weaker, so a number that drops three or four weeks running is a real signal, and it is fixable. It measures what you can do, not how much muscle you have.

  2. Average protein a day, whole week

Not your best day. 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg of goal body weight (0.55 to 0.7 g per lb), floor 1.2, protein first at every meal.

  3. Upper arm tape, same spot, relaxed

Centimetres or inches. The waist shrinks whatever you do; if the arm shrinks as fast, that is muscle. Weight is number four, same day and time. The scale tells you what you lost. These tell you what you kept.

Questions people ask

How many protein shakes a day on Ozempic?

One or two, filling the gap between what you eat and your target. Most people we coach need one. If you are managing only two small meals a day, two shakes is reasonable while appetite is at its lowest.

Is whey or plant protein better on Ozempic?

Whey isolate is lower in lactose and tends to sit lightest on a queasy stomach. A pea and rice blend covers the amino acids well for plant eaters and is usually gentler than a pure soy or pure pea powder.

What is the best protein shake for Ozempic users?

One with 25 g or more of protein per serve, low sugar and no sugar alcohols. Whey isolate suits most people and sits lightest in the first two days after an injection, which is when volume is hardest.

The research behind this page

What to look for on the label, in numbers rather than marketing. A scoop of whey is the cheapest way to clear both of these.

Spread across meals at roughly 0.3 to 0.4 g per kg per meal, rather than taken mostly at dinner. Arslan S, Clinical Nutrition ESPEN 2026

Each of those meals wants roughly 2.5 to 3 g of leucine, the amino acid that actually switches muscle building on. That is about 30 g of whey, 120 g of chicken breast, or four eggs. Arslan S, Clinical Nutrition ESPEN 2026
