Constipation on Saxenda: what helps, and what to eat

Constipation on Saxenda responds to three numbers: 25 to 30 g of fibre a day, 2 to 2.5 litres (68 to 85 fl oz) of fluid, and a daily 20-minute walk, all built up over a week rather than a day. Keep your protein coming from foods that carry fibre with them (lentils, beans, yoghurt with berries, tofu with vegetables) rather than dropping protein to make room.

Your number, before anything else

Protein is what decides whether the weight you lose is fat or muscle. Work your number out once and we will keep it with you on every page here. No account, no email.

The week-long fix

Saxenda's daily dosing gives a steadier gut effect without the post-injection surge, so constipation tends to be milder but persistent. The daily walk and the morning fluid habit matter more than any single food.

  1. Fibre up slowly to 25 to 30 g

    Jumping from 10 g to 30 g in a day makes bloating worse. Add about 5 g every two days: a kiwi fruit (2 g), 30 g (1 oz) of oats (3 g), half a tin of lentils (6 g), two tablespoons of chia (7 g).

  2. Fluid to 2 to 2.5 litres (68 to 85 fl oz)

Fibre without water is cement. Warm fluid in the morning helps many people: a large glass of water on waking, then sips all day.

  3. Choose protein that carries fibre

Lentils, chickpeas, black beans, edamame, tofu and Greek yoghurt with berries deliver protein and fibre together. 200 g (7 oz) of cooked lentils is 18 g of protein and 8 g of fibre.

  4. Ask a pharmacist about a fibre supplement or a gentle laxative

Psyllium husk is the common one. What to take, and whether it interacts with anything, is a pharmacist or prescriber question, not a coaching one.

  5. Make the walk a daily fixture

Saxenda's constipation is milder but persistent. Twenty minutes after your main meal every day does more than any single food, and it is the easiest habit on this page to keep.

Why Saxenda slows everything down

Liraglutide mimics the gut hormone GLP-1: it slows stomach emptying and brings fullness on sooner. Dosed daily and cleared within a day or two, its effect is steadier and milder than the weekly medications. The same slowing that keeps you full also slows the whole gut, and when you are eating less there is less bulk moving through it. Add less fluid, because you are not thirsty, and less walking, because you are tired, and you have all three causes together. In the SCALE trials of liraglutide, nausea was reported by roughly four in ten people and constipation by about one in five, mostly in the first weeks as the dose stepped up.

Where this bites for muscle is that constipation makes people eat less still. A bloated, uncomfortable gut takes appetite with it, and protein goes first. The fix is not to eat less; it is to change what goes in.

A high-fibre 100 g protein day

  • Breakfast: 200 g (7 oz) Greek yoghurt, 30 g (1 oz) oats, 100 g (3.5 oz) berries, 1 tbsp chia: about 26 g protein, 10 g fibre
  • Lunch: 200 g (7 oz) lentil and vegetable soup with 80 g (3 oz) chicken: about 35 g protein, 8 g fibre
  • Afternoon: 2 kiwi fruit and 30 g (1 oz) almonds: about 6 g protein, 7 g fibre
  • Dinner: 120 g (4 oz) fish, 100 g (3.5 oz) broccoli, 100 g (3.5 oz) sweet potato with skin: about 33 g protein, 6 g fibre

About 100 g of protein and 31 g of fibre. Start at half these fibre amounts if you are currently very low, and build across the week.

Three numbers, every Sunday

Constipation drags appetite down, so the protein average is the one to watch this fortnight.

  1. One strength test, same way every week

Goblet squat reps at a fixed weight, push-ups, or the 30-second sit-to-stand for beginners. Fat loss does not make you weaker, so a number that drops three or four weeks running is a real signal, and it is fixable. It measures what you can do, not how much muscle you have.

  2. Average protein a day, whole week

Not your best day. 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg of goal body weight (0.55 to 0.7 g per lb), floor 1.2, protein first at every meal.

  3. Upper arm tape, same spot, relaxed

Centimetres or inches. The waist shrinks whatever you do; if the arm shrinks as fast, that is muscle. Weight is number four, same day and time. The scale tells you what you lost. These tell you what you kept.

When it is more than a coaching problem

  • No bowel movement for more than four or five days despite fluid, fibre and walking
  • Severe or worsening abdominal pain, vomiting, or a swollen, hard belly
  • Blood in the stool
  • Whether a laxative is appropriate, and anything about your dose

Dose and timing on Saxenda are your prescriber's decisions; we coach the food and the strength.

Forty foods, ranked by protein per bite

The hard part is not knowing you need protein on Saxenda, it is hitting the number on a day when food is the last thing you want. One page, grams and ounces, what a real serve looks like, and the first-bite rule for when appetite is gone. Print it and put it on the fridge.

Then five short emails over five days on keeping muscle while the weight comes off, and a short note every fortnight after that if you want it. One click to stop, any time.

Questions people ask

Does constipation on Saxenda go away?

In the people we coach it improves for most once fibre, fluid and walking are steady, usually within a week or two. It can return after each dose step, so the habits need to stay.

Which protein foods are best for constipation on Saxenda?

Legumes, tofu, yoghurt and fish, paired with vegetables and fruit. Large amounts of cheese and processed meat with no fibre alongside tend to make it worse.

Why am I constipated on Saxenda when I eat vegetables?

Vegetables carry less fibre than most people think: 100 g (3.5 oz) of broccoli is about 3 g. Add legumes, oats, chia and fruit with skin, and check the fluid number.
