Training at home on Saxenda: the budget setup that covers everything

You need three things, and you can start with none of them. A pair of adjustable dumbbells or two kettlebells, a long resistance band, and something to step onto. That covers the squat pattern, the hinge, the push, the pull, the carry and the brace, which is every movement we use. Second hand, the lot comes in under A$150 / US$95 / £75, and a chair, a backpack and two shopping bags will cover the first month while you decide. On Saxenda the equipment is not what keeps your muscle. The load going up week after week is.

Your number, before anything else

Protein is what decides whether the weight you lose is fat or muscle. Work your number out once and we will keep it with you on every page here. No account, no email.

What to buy, in order

Saxenda's even daily rhythm means any day can be a training day, so a home setup and two fixed slots is usually all the structure you need.

  1. Start with nothing for two weeks

A chair for sit-to-stands, a wall or bench for push-ups, a backpack with books in it for carries and hinges, and two shopping bags. Two weeks of that tells you whether you will train before you spend anything.

  2. Buy weight you can hold, second hand

One pair of adjustable dumbbells, or two kettlebells at different weights. This is eighty per cent of the value of any home setup, and second hand is usually half price and identical.

  3. Add a long resistance band

The pull is the movement people miss at home. A band around a door anchor or a bannister covers rows and pull-downs for the price of a takeaway.

  4. Add a step, or use the stairs you already have

A low box or the bottom stair covers step-ups and elevated push-ups. There is rarely any reason to buy this one at all.

  5. Pick two slots and leave the gear out

Saxenda's steady appetite makes any two days workable. Leaving the kit visible is what turns two intentions into two sessions.

What you actually need, and what you do not

Almost every home gym purchase people regret is a machine that does one thing. What holds muscle in a calorie deficit is loading six basic movements and adding a little weight to them over time, which needs weight you can hold, something to pull against, and something to step onto. Pooled across 20 randomised trials, 26.8% of the weight lost on liraglutide was lean mass, against 26.2% when the same weight came off by diet alone, and 17.5% when resistance training was added. The gear is a way of adding load and nothing more.

Liraglutide's appetite effect is milder and steadier than the weekly medications. Most people we coach on Saxenda can eat a normal small meal; the risk is subtler, because the appetite that remains is often for toast rather than for chicken. The reason home training suits people on these medications is energy and time. A thirty-minute session in your kitchen on a flat day is a session that happens. The same session with a drive, a car park and a change room is a session you skip, and skipped sessions are what the trials are describing when they report lean mass going.

The whole setup, and what it costs

  • Adjustable dumbbells or two kettlebells, second hand: about A$60 to A$110 / US$40 to US$70 / £30 to £55
  • A long resistance band with a door anchor: about A$20 to A$30 / US$13 to US$20 / £10 to £15
  • A step, a low box, or the bottom stair: free to about A$40 / US$25 / £20
  • A mat if the floor is hard, and a notebook, which is the most useful item on the list

Under A$150 / US$95 / £75 for the lot, and it covers all six movements for years. Everything beyond this is convenience rather than results.

Work out your own target on Saxenda

Three numbers, every Sunday

Equipment does not tell you whether the plan is working. These three do, and the notebook is where they live.

  1. One strength test, same way every week

Goblet squat reps at a fixed weight, push-ups, or the 30-second sit-to-stand for beginners. Fat loss does not make you weaker, so a number that drops three or four weeks running is a real signal, and it is fixable. It measures what you can do, not how much muscle you have.

  2. Average protein a day, whole week

Not your best day. 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg of goal body weight (0.55 to 0.7 g per lb), floor 1.2, protein first at every meal.

  3. Upper arm tape, same spot, relaxed

Centimetres or inches. The waist shrinks whatever you do; if the arm shrinks as fast, that is muscle. Weight is number four, same day and time. The scale tells you what you lost. These tell you what you kept.

Before you start training at home

  • A heart, lung, kidney or metabolic condition, or chest pain, breathlessness or dizziness on exertion, all of which mean a conversation first
  • A back, shoulder, hip or knee problem, where a physiotherapist can set your ranges once and save you months of guessing
  • Any dizziness or light-headedness that has started since the medication, particularly if you plan to lift at home on your own

Dose and timing on Saxenda are your prescriber's decisions; we coach the food and the strength.

Forty foods, ranked by protein per bite

The hard part is not knowing you need protein on Saxenda, it is hitting the number on a day when food is the last thing you want. One page, grams and ounces, what a real serve looks like, and the first-bite rule for when appetite is gone. Print it and put it on the fridge.

Then five short emails over five days on keeping muscle while the weight comes off, and a short note every fortnight after that if you want it. One click to stop, any time.

Questions people ask

What is the minimum equipment to keep muscle on Saxenda?

A pair of dumbbells or two kettlebells and a long resistance band. That is enough to load all six movements and to keep adding weight for a year or more.

Are resistance bands enough on their own?

For the first month, yes, especially for pushes and pulls. They become the limit for legs quite quickly, because adding meaningful load with a band is awkward and you cannot measure it.

How much does a useful home setup cost?

Under A$150 / US$95 / £75 second hand: dumbbells or kettlebells, a long band, and a step you probably already own. The notebook costs nothing and matters more than any of it.

Where these numbers come from

A band and two dumbbells buy you the same thing a gym does, and this is what that thing is worth in numbers.

Supervised resistance training for longer than 10 weeks has produced gains of around 3 kg (6.6 lb) of lean mass and around 25% in strength in adults. Locatelli JC et al, Diabetes Care 2024

Adding resistance training brought the lean share of weight lost down to 17.5%, the most favourable result of any approach studied. Eisa N et al, Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism 2026
