Injecting Saxenda: when to eat around your daily dose

Saxenda is a daily injection, so there is no weekly injection day to plan around; the pattern is inside each day. Levels peak about eight to twelve hours after you inject, so put your main protein meal before that peak or well after it, and keep the meals inside the peak small, cold and protein-first.

Your number, before anything else

Protein is what decides whether the weight you lose is fat or muscle. Work your number out once and we will keep it with you on every page here. No account, no email.

Building your day around the peak

Most people we coach on Saxenda inject in the morning, which puts the peak in the late afternoon and makes dinner the hardest meal of the day. If dinner is the meal you care about, an evening injection moves the peak into the night; ask your prescriber before changing the time.

  1. Pick one injection time and keep it

Same time every day. The appetite pattern only becomes predictable if the injection time is.

  2. Eat your main protein meal outside the peak

If you inject at 08:00, the peak is mid to late afternoon; make breakfast and a late dinner your two biggest protein meals, 35 to 40 g each.

  3. Keep the peak-window meal small and cold

Yoghurt, cottage cheese, a shake, tinned fish: about 20 g, no cooking, no smell.

  4. Watch the first month

The dose steps up weekly through the first month, so the peak feeling changes week to week. Note when in the day nausea lands, and shift the big meal away from it.

  5. Train before the peak

A morning session on a morning injection, or an evening session on an evening one. Do not train into the peak; that is the flattest part of the day.

What a daily injection does to your appetite

Saxenda is liraglutide, injected once a day. Blood levels peak about eight to twelve hours after the injection and the half-life is about 13 hours, so the level in your system rises and falls every day rather than every week. That gives a daily rhythm: side effects and the strongest fullness in the hours around the peak, and the most appetite in the hours before the next injection. In the SCALE trials of liraglutide, nausea was reported by roughly four in ten people and constipation by about one in five, mostly in the first weeks as the dose stepped up.

Once you know where the peak lands in your day, it is useful. Put your big protein meals outside it and the low-effort cold protein inside it. Pooled across 20 randomised trials, 26.8% of the weight lost on liraglutide was lean mass, against 26.2% when the same weight came off by diet alone, and 17.5% when resistance training was added. The peak hours every day, badly handled, are where a lot of it goes.

A rough day on Saxenda: about 90 g in five cold stops

  • 08:00: 170 g (6 oz) Greek yoghurt: about 17 g
  • 11:00: shake, 250 ml (8.5 fl oz) milk plus protein powder: about 30 g
  • 14:00: 2 boiled eggs: about 13 g
  • 17:00: 95 g (3.5 oz) tin of tuna: about 20 g
  • 20:00: 100 g (3.5 oz) cottage cheese: about 12 g

About 92 g. On a normal day, swap the two stops furthest from the peak for proper 35 to 40 g meals.

Three numbers, every Sunday

Take the strength test and the tape at the same time of day each week, outside the peak, so the daily cycle does not skew them.

  1. One strength test, same way every week

Goblet squat reps at a fixed weight, push-ups, or the 30-second sit-to-stand for beginners. Fat loss does not make you weaker, so a number that drops three or four weeks running is a real signal, and it is fixable. It measures what you can do, not how much muscle you have.

  2. Average protein a day, whole week

Not your best day. 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg of goal body weight (0.55 to 0.7 g per lb), floor 1.2, protein first at every meal.

  3. Upper arm tape, same spot, relaxed

Centimetres or inches. The waist shrinks whatever you do; if the arm shrinks as fast, that is muscle. Weight is number four, same day and time. The scale tells you what you lost. These tell you what you kept.

Prescriber questions, not coaching questions

  • Vomiting on injection day that lasts beyond 24 hours, or you cannot keep fluids down
  • A missed dose, or a question about changing the day or time you inject
  • Injection-site reactions that are red, hot or spreading

Dose and timing on Saxenda are your prescriber's decisions; we coach the food and the strength.

Forty foods, ranked by protein per bite

The hard part is not knowing you need protein on Saxenda, it is hitting the number on a day when food is the last thing you want. One page, grams and ounces, what a real serve looks like, and the first-bite rule for when appetite is gone. Print it and put it on the fridge.

Questions people ask

Should we eat before our Saxenda injection?

Eat your main protein meal at whichever end of the day is furthest from the peak, which arrives eight to twelve hours after the injection. Before a morning injection, a protein breakfast works well.

What should we eat during the Saxenda peak?

Small, cold, plain protein: yoghurt, cottage cheese, a shake, tinned fish. About 20 g, no cooking.

Should we inject Saxenda in the morning or at night?

Both work; what matters is consistency and where the peak lands in your day. Changing the time is a question for your prescriber.

Where these numbers come from

Small meals on injection day still have to clear the thresholds below, which is why what you eat matters more than how much.

Spread across meals at roughly 0.3 to 0.4 g per kg per meal, rather than taken mostly at dinner. Arslan S, Clinical Nutrition ESPEN 2026

Each of those meals wants roughly 2.5 to 3 g of leucine, the amino acid that actually switches muscle building on. That is about 30 g of whey, 120 g of chicken breast, or four eggs. Arslan S, Clinical Nutrition ESPEN 2026
