Shift work on Wegovy: how to eat enough when your days flip

Shift work breaks the four-meal structure most GLP-1 advice assumes, so anchor protein to your shift rather than to the clock. Three fixed points cover almost any roster: one before the shift, one in the middle, one after. Each carries 25 to 35 g. What you cannot do is wait to be hungry at a sensible hour, because on Wegovy the hunger signal has gone and shift work removes whatever rhythm was left. Anything to do with injection timing and your roster is a question for your prescriber.

Your number, before anything else

Protein is what decides whether the weight you lose is fat or muscle. Work your number out once and we will keep it with you on every page here. No account, no email.

Three anchors and a packed bag

At the top Wegovy doses the mid-shift stop is often the only thing you will manage all night, so it has to be the densest item in the bag rather than a snack.

  1. Before the shift: the biggest protein serve of your day

Eat this one at home, where the food is good and the kitchen is yours. Thirty to thirty five grams, whatever time your shift starts, treated as non-negotiable.

  2. Mid-shift: something cold that needs no kitchen

Greek yoghurt, a ready-made shake, cottage cheese, a tin of tuna, boiled eggs or beef jerky. All survive a bag and a locker, and none need a microwave you have to queue for.

  3. After the shift: a small protein stop before sleep

Twenty five to thirty grams of a slower protein, such as Greek yoghurt or milk, before day sleep. Most shift workers skip this one, and it does more for recovery than they expect.

  4. Pack the bag the day before, not on the way out

This is the whole system. Nobody makes good decisions at the start of a night shift. A packed bag decides for you while you are still rested.

  5. Make the mid-shift stop the densest thing you own

At the upper steps you may only manage one item all night. A 30 g ready-made shake weighs nothing and does not need a fridge.

Why the standard advice does not fit a roster

Nearly every eating plan assumes breakfast, lunch and dinner. On a night roster those words mean nothing, and on a rotating one they mean something different each week. At the upper Wegovy steps the appetite effect is stronger than most people expect: fullness after a few mouthfuls, and long stretches where food does not cross your mind. People we coach at the top of the ladder are often eating the least of anyone. Combine that with a workplace where the only food available at 3am came out of a vending machine, and the protein target quietly stops being hit.

It matters more than it would have before, because you are in a deficit. Pooled across 20 randomised trials, 35.2% of the weight lost on semaglutide was lean mass, against 26.2% when the same weight came off by diet alone, and 17.5% when resistance training was added. The shift workers we coach who miss the target usually miss it in the same place: the long stretch in the middle of a night shift, where nothing came from home and nothing on site carries protein.

A night shift at about 100 g of protein

  • Before leaving, 5pm: 150 g (5 oz) chicken with rice and vegetables, about 38 g
  • Midnight: a 200 g (7 oz) tub of Greek yoghurt or a ready-made shake, about 20 to 30 g
  • 4am: a 95 g (3.4 oz) tin of tuna with crackers, or two boiled eggs, about 15 to 23 g
  • Before sleep, 8am: 250 ml (8.5 fl oz) milk or a small yoghurt, about 10 to 15 g

Around 95 to 105 g of protein across a night, none of it cooked at work. Swap the tuna for jerky or a cheese stick if smell is a problem in a shared room.

Three numbers, every Sunday

Rosters make the week look chaotic. These three stay comparable whatever your shift pattern does.

  1. One strength test, same way every week

Goblet squat reps at a fixed weight, push-ups, or the 30-second sit-to-stand for beginners. Fat loss does not make you weaker, so a number that drops three or four weeks running is a real signal, and it is fixable. It measures what you can do, not how much muscle you have.

  2. Average protein a day, whole week

Not your best day. 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg of goal body weight (0.55 to 0.7 g per lb), floor 1.2, protein first at every meal.

  3. Upper arm tape, same spot, relaxed

Centimetres or inches. The waist shrinks whatever you do; if the arm shrinks as fast, that is muscle. Weight is number four, same day and time. The scale tells you what you lost. These tell you what you kept.

Questions for your prescriber, not for a roster

  • When to take your medication if your sleep and waking times change every week, which is a prescriber's call and not a detail to improvise
  • Blood sugar management on a rotating roster if you also take medication for diabetes
  • Persistent nausea, reflux or dizziness on shift, particularly if you drive or operate machinery

Dose and timing on Wegovy are your prescriber's decisions; we coach the food and the strength.

Forty foods, ranked by protein per bite

The hard part is not knowing you need protein on Wegovy, it is hitting the number on a day when food is the last thing you want. One page, grams and ounces, what a real serve looks like, and the first-bite rule for when appetite is gone. Print it and put it on the fridge.

Then five short emails over five days on keeping muscle while the weight comes off, and a short note every fortnight after that if you want it. One click to stop, any time.

Questions people ask

How do I hit my protein target on night shift on Wegovy?

Three anchors: a large protein meal before the shift, a cold protein stop in the middle, and a small one before sleep. Pack all of it the day before, because nothing on site will carry 30 g.

Should I eat at 3am?

If your shift runs through it, yes, and it should be protein rather than whatever is in the vending machine. A missed middle is where most shift workers lose the day's target.

I cannot eat during a night shift on Wegovy. What do I do?

Make the pre-shift meal the big one, take one dense cold item for the middle, and have a small yoghurt or milk before sleep. That is 80 to 90 g without eating anything at 3am you do not want.

Where these numbers come from

Your days flip, the numbers do not. Spread them across whatever your waking hours turn out to be.

Spread across meals at roughly 0.3 to 0.4 g per kg per meal, rather than taken mostly at dinner. Arslan S, Clinical Nutrition ESPEN 2026

Each of those meals wants roughly 2.5 to 3 g of leucine, the amino acid that actually switches muscle building on. That is about 30 g of whey, 120 g of chicken breast, or four eggs. Arslan S, Clinical Nutrition ESPEN 2026
