Missed a Saxenda dose: how to eat for the day or two after

What to do about the missed injection itself is a question for your prescriber or pharmacist, and we do not answer it. On the food side, a missed day of Saxenda is a short gap rather than a week: liraglutide is cleared within a day or two, so fullness fades and appetite may be stronger by the next day. Keep the four protein stops exactly where they are, let any extra appetite go into protein and vegetables rather than into grazing, keep the two strength sessions, and keep the plates small when the medication resumes.

Your number, before anything else

Protein is what decides whether the weight you lose is fat or muscle. Work your number out once and we will keep it with you on every page here. No account, no email.

What a missed day does to your appetite

Saxenda is liraglutide, injected once a day. Blood levels peak about eight to twelve hours after the injection and the half-life is about 13 hours, so a missed injection lets the level fall away over the following day rather than the following week. Fullness arrives later in a meal and the interest in food comes back, which most people notice at the first meal after the gap.

The risk to your muscle is not one day of more food. Pooled across 20 randomised trials, 26.8% of the weight lost on liraglutide was lean mass, against 26.2% when the same weight came off by diet alone, and 17.5% when resistance training was added. A single day of larger protein meals at the table, with the strength session done if it was due, is closer to a good day than a bad one. A day of grazing is not.

Saxenda is daily and cleared within a day or two, so a missed injection is a short gap rather than a week. Appetite may be stronger the next day; eat protein first at each meal and ask your prescriber or pharmacist about the dose.

Running a missed day without losing the week

  1. Get the dose question answered today

Ring your prescriber or pharmacist rather than searching forums. Once you know what happens with the medication, the food plan runs the same whichever answer you get.

  2. Keep the four protein stops, and make them bigger

Appetite may be back, so the 30 g meals can become 40 g meals. Chicken, fish, eggs, yoghurt, lean mince. Protein first, then vegetables, then whatever else you want.

  3. Eat from a plate, at a table, at the usual times

A gap day goes wrong through grazing rather than through the meals. Four sittings, protein first, nothing in between except water, tea and coffee.

  4. Keep the strength session if one is due

A well-fed session is the best kind. Two 30-minute sessions a week, wherever they fall, with proper food around them.

  5. Treat it as a day, not a week

Saxenda is cleared within a day or two, so a missed injection is a short gap. Eat protein first at each meal, keep the day normal, and get the dose question answered by your prescriber or pharmacist.

A gap-day plan at about 130 g of protein

  • Breakfast: 3 eggs with 30 g (1 oz) cheese and one slice of toast, about 27 g
  • Lunch: 150 g (5 oz) chicken breast in a large salad with a roll, about 46 g
  • Afternoon: 200 g (7 oz) Greek yoghurt with fruit, about 20 g
  • Dinner: 150 g (5 oz) salmon with potato and greens, about 37 g

Around 130 g on a day when eating is easy. Fill the rest of the plate with vegetables and a normal serve of carbohydrate, and drink water between meals.

Forty foods, ranked by protein per bite

The hard part is not knowing you need protein on Saxenda, it is hitting the number on a day when food is the last thing you want. One page, grams and ounces, what a real serve looks like, and the first-bite rule for when appetite is gone. Print it and put it on the fridge.

Then five short emails over five days on keeping muscle while the weight comes off, and a short note every fortnight after that if you want it. One click to stop, any time.

The questions that belong with your prescriber or pharmacist

  • Whether to take the missed dose late or wait for the next scheduled one, and how a gap affects your dose schedule, which we never advise on
  • Nausea, vomiting or stomach pain when the medication resumes, particularly if you have been off it for more than a week or two
  • Blood sugar management through the gap if you also take insulin or other diabetes medication

Dose and timing on Saxenda are your prescriber's decisions; we coach the food and the strength.

The three numbers that tell you what you are keeping

A missed day feels like a slip. These three numbers, taken on the usual day, show whether anything that matters has changed.

  1. One strength test, same way every week

Goblet squat reps at a fixed weight, push-ups, or the 30-second sit-to-stand for beginners. Fat loss does not make you weaker, so a number that drops three or four weeks running is a real signal, and it is fixable. It measures what you can do, not how much muscle you have.

  2. Average protein a day, whole week

Not your best day. 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg of goal body weight (0.55 to 0.7 g per lb), floor 1.2, protein first at every meal.

  3. Upper arm tape, same spot, relaxed

Centimetres or inches. The waist shrinks whatever you do; if the arm shrinks as fast, that is muscle. Weight is number four, same day and time. The scale tells you what you lost. These tell you what you kept.

Questions people ask

I missed my Saxenda injection. What should I do?

Ask your prescriber or pharmacist about the dose; that is their call and not ours. On the food side, expect a stronger appetite the next day, keep the four protein stops and eat from a plate rather than grazing.

Will I gain weight from one missed day of Saxenda?

The scale may rise slightly from more food and fluid in the system. That is not fat. A protein-first day and the usual structure keeps the composition where it was.

What happens to my appetite if I miss a day of Saxenda?

It may be stronger the next day, because liraglutide is cleared within a day or two. Eat protein first at each meal and keep the day's structure. What to do about the missed injection is a question for your prescriber or pharmacist.

The research behind this page

Appetite swings after a missed dose. The target does not, so these are the two numbers to steer by.

Guideline-informed protein targets during this kind of weight loss start at 1.2 g per kg of body weight a day (0.55 g per lb). Arslan S, Clinical Nutrition ESPEN 2026

Spread across meals at roughly 0.3 to 0.4 g per kg per meal, rather than taken mostly at dinner. Arslan S, Clinical Nutrition ESPEN 2026
