How to hit your protein on 800 calories a day on Zepbound
On 800 calories (3,350 kJ) a day, protein has to be about half of everything you eat: 90 to 100 g, or 360 to 400 calories, from the leanest sources you can find. It is possible, but only if almost every mouthful is protein first.
Your number, before anything else
Protein is what decides whether the weight you lose is fat or muscle. Work your number out once and we will keep it with you on every page here. No account, no email.
Saved in this browser only. Your dose and how you feel on Zepbound stay between you and your prescriber.
Zepbound users at the upper steps can find 800 calories is a full day without trying. Lean protein at every stop and a food log for your prescriber are the two things we ask for.
The full 800-calorie, 100 g protein day
- 07:00: 170 g (6 oz) non-fat Greek yoghurt: 17 g protein, 100 cal (420 kJ)
- 10:00: protein powder in water, one scoop: 25 g, 110 cal (460 kJ)
- 13:00: 95 g (3.5 oz) tin of tuna in springwater with cucumber: 21 g, 110 cal (460 kJ)
- 16:00: 100 g (3.5 oz) cooked chicken breast: 31 g, 165 cal (690 kJ)
- 19:00: 2 eggs with 100 g (3.5 oz) spinach: 13 g, 170 cal (710 kJ)
About 107 g of protein for around 655 calories (2,750 kJ), leaving room for tea, coffee with milk, fruit or a little olive oil. An emergency-day template, not a way to live.
Work out your own target on ZepboundThe arithmetic of a very small day
Tirzepatide is the medication where people most often describe a very short appetite window: a few bites, then done. Zepbound users tell us the food noise goes quiet almost entirely, which feels like freedom and removes every reminder to eat. At 800 calories there is no room for anything that does not carry protein. A slice of toast with butter is 150 calories (630 kJ) and 3 g of protein; 150 g (5 oz) of cottage cheese is the same calories and 17 g.
Pooled across 20 randomised trials, 25.4% of the weight lost on tirzepatide was lean mass, against 26.2% when the same weight came off by diet alone, and 17.5% when resistance training was added. At very low intakes the share can be worse, because the body is short on both energy and amino acids and takes both from muscle. Treat 800-calorie days as emergency protein days. If 800 is every day, that is a prescriber conversation, not a diet strategy.
Getting 95 g into 800 calories
Lean means under 4 calories per gram of protein
Chicken breast, white fish, prawns, tinned tuna in springwater, egg whites, non-fat Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, protein powder, tofu. Fatty cuts, cheese and nuts cost too many calories here.
Five stops, not three meals
About 160 calories (670 kJ) and 20 g of protein at each, then 100 g (3.5 oz) of cucumber, tomato or leaves for volume. Small enough to get down on no appetite, frequent enough to add up.
Liquid protein for at least one stop
A scoop of protein powder in water is about 25 g for 110 calories (460 kJ); in 250 ml (8.5 fl oz) of skim milk, about 33 g for 200 calories (840 kJ).
Fluids and salt
Two litres (68 fl oz), and a pinch of salt on food. Very low intake pulls sodium and water down too, which is much of the flat, dizzy feeling.
Log the week for your prescriber
Zepbound users at the upper steps can be at 800 calories for weeks without meaning to be. A seven-day log of what went in is what your prescriber needs to judge the dose.
How you will know it is working
At this intake the strength test is your early warning.
One strength test, same way every week
Goblet squat reps at a fixed weight, push-ups, or the 30-second sit-to-stand for beginners. Fat loss does not make you weaker, so a number that drops three or four weeks running is a real signal, and it is fixable. It measures what you can do, not how much muscle you have.
Average protein a day, whole week
Not your best day. 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg of goal body weight (0.55 to 0.7 g per lb), floor 1.2, protein first at every meal.
Upper arm tape, same spot, relaxed
Centimetres or inches. The waist shrinks whatever you do; if the arm shrinks as fast, that is muscle. Weight is number four, same day and time. The scale tells you what you lost. These tell you what you kept.
This is where your prescriber comes in
- Eating under about 1,000 calories (4,200 kJ) most days for more than two or three weeks
- Dizziness, fainting, heart palpitations, or a strength test dropping week on week
- Losing more than 1.5 kg (3 lb) a week consistently
- Whether your dose is the reason intake is this low. Only they can answer that
Dose and timing on Zepbound are your prescriber's decisions; we coach the food and the strength.
Questions people ask
Is 800 calories a day safe on Zepbound?
Not as a long-term pattern without medical supervision. As an occasional bad day, the plan above keeps protein and fluids up. If it is most days, tell your prescriber.
How much protein can we fit into 800 calories on Zepbound?
About 90 to 110 g if every food is a lean protein source: about half your calories from protein, far more than a normal diet but exactly what a small day needs.
Should we force calories on Zepbound if we are not hungry?
Force protein, not calories. 90 to 100 g from lean sources, then fluids and salt. If total intake is under 1,000 calories (4,200 kJ) most days, tell your prescriber.
What the evidence actually says
At 800 calories every meal has to earn its place, so the per-meal numbers matter more here than the daily total does.
Guideline-informed protein targets during this kind of weight loss start at 1.2 g per kg of body weight a day (0.55 g per lb). Arslan S, Clinical Nutrition ESPEN 2026
Spread across meals at roughly 0.3 to 0.4 g per kg per meal, rather than taken mostly at dinner. Arslan S, Clinical Nutrition ESPEN 2026
Each of those meals wants roughly 2.5 to 3 g of leucine, the amino acid that actually switches muscle building on. That is about 30 g of whey, 120 g of chicken breast, or four eggs. Arslan S, Clinical Nutrition ESPEN 2026
