Protein on a very small appetite on Zepbound: getting to 100 g from almost nothing

When the whole day is three or four small servings, the only thing that gets you to 100 g of protein is density: how much protein each mouthful carries. Liquids beat solids, because a shake at 30 g goes down when a plate does not. After that it is Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, tinned fish, eggs, prawns and skinless chicken, all of which carry 20 to 30 g in a portion the size of your palm. On Zepbound the plan is four small protein stops at fixed times, 25 to 35 g each, and nothing else on the plate until the protein is gone.

Your number, before anything else

Protein is what decides whether the weight you lose is fat or muscle. Work your number out once and we will keep it with you on every page here. No account, no email.

How to build the day around four stops

Zepbound removes the reminder as well as the hunger, so the alarms matter as much as the food. Most people who miss the target on Zepbound missed a stop, not a gram.

  1. Fix four times and keep them

Hunger will not remind you. Four alarms, roughly four hours apart, each carrying 25 to 35 g of protein. Two of the four can be liquid and nobody will mind.

  2. Protein first, every single time

The first three or four mouthfuls are the only ones you can count on, so they should be the highest protein thing on the plate. Vegetables and carbohydrate come after, if there is room left.

  3. Put one stop in a glass

A shake made with milk rather than water is 30 to 35 g in 300 ml (10 fl oz), and it goes down on the days when nothing else will. This is the single most useful change on a very small appetite.

  4. Fortify what you already eat

Two tablespoons of skim milk powder in porridge, soup or mash adds about 8 g for almost no volume. A scoop of unflavoured whey in yoghurt adds around 20 g and changes very little about the taste.

  5. Use alarms rather than appetite

On Zepbound the hunger cue can go completely quiet. Four alarms and one prepared option at each is the entire system, and it is why people who plan on Zepbound do so much better than people who improvise.

Density is the only lever you have left

When appetite goes you lose volume, not the requirement. The protein target does not fall because you are eating less. If anything it matters more, because a large deficit is the thing that takes muscle. Pooled across 20 randomised trials, 25.4% of the weight lost on tirzepatide was lean mass, against 26.2% when the same weight came off by diet alone, and 17.5% when resistance training was added. So the question stops being what to eat and becomes how much protein each mouthful can carry.

Tirzepatide is the medication where people most often describe a very short appetite window: a few bites, then done. Zepbound users tell us the food noise goes quiet almost entirely, which feels like freedom and removes every reminder to eat. Ranked by protein per 100 g the useful list is short: whey powder around 75 g, biltong or jerky around 50 g, parmesan about 35 g, cooked skinless chicken about 31 g, tinned tuna about 25 g, prawns about 24 g, eggs about 13 g, cottage cheese about 11 g, Greek yoghurt about 10 g. Anything under about 8 g per 100 g is taking up room you cannot spare.

A day at about 110 g of protein in four small stops

  • 7am: 170 g (6 oz) Greek yoghurt with a tablespoon of skim milk powder, about 25 g
  • 11am: a whey shake in 300 ml (10 fl oz) milk, about 34 g
  • 3pm: a 95 g (3.4 oz) tin of tuna with crackers, about 23 g
  • 7pm: 100 g (3.5 oz) cooked chicken or salmon with whatever vegetables you can manage, about 30 g

Around 110 g of protein and roughly 900 to 1,000 calories, none of it needing a full plate. If the evening stop is the one you keep missing, move it earlier and make it the shake.

Three numbers, every Sunday

On a very small appetite the weekly protein average decides what you keep. These three make it visible.

  1. One strength test, same way every week

Goblet squat reps at a fixed weight, push-ups, or the 30-second sit-to-stand for beginners. Fat loss does not make you weaker, so a number that drops three or four weeks running is a real signal, and it is fixable. It measures what you can do, not how much muscle you have.

  2. Average protein a day, whole week

Not your best day. 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg of goal body weight (0.55 to 0.7 g per lb), floor 1.2, protein first at every meal.

  3. Upper arm tape, same spot, relaxed

Centimetres or inches. The waist shrinks whatever you do; if the arm shrinks as fast, that is muscle. Weight is number four, same day and time. The scale tells you what you lost. These tell you what you kept.

When to involve your prescriber

  • Barely eating for several days, dizziness on standing, or losing weight far faster than your prescriber expected
  • Vomiting that stops food staying down, which is a different problem from a small appetite and needs assessment
  • A history of disordered eating, a kidney or liver condition, or any protein supplement you plan to use every day

Dose and timing on Zepbound are your prescriber's decisions; we coach the food and the strength.

Forty foods, ranked by protein per bite

The hard part is not knowing you need protein on Zepbound, it is hitting the number on a day when food is the last thing you want. One page, grams and ounces, what a real serve looks like, and the first-bite rule for when appetite is gone. Print it and put it on the fridge.

Then five short emails over five days on keeping muscle while the weight comes off, and a short note every fortnight after that if you want it. One click to stop, any time.

Questions people ask

How do I get 100 g of protein when I can barely eat on Zepbound?

Four fixed stops of 25 to 35 g, two of them liquid, and protein before anything else on the plate. Whey, Greek yoghurt, tinned fish, eggs, prawns and chicken do most of the work.

Is it all right to get most of my protein from shakes?

On a small appetite it is often the difference between hitting the target and missing it. Keep at least one whole food serve a day for everything else food brings, and use shakes to close the gaps.

I forget to eat on Zepbound. What do I do?

Set four alarms and keep one prepared option for each. On Zepbound the missing piece is almost always the reminder rather than the willingness.

Where these numbers come from

Getting to 100 g from almost nothing is an arithmetic problem, and these are the two numbers the arithmetic has to satisfy.

Spread across meals at roughly 0.3 to 0.4 g per kg per meal, rather than taken mostly at dinner. Arslan S, Clinical Nutrition ESPEN 2026

Each of those meals wants roughly 2.5 to 3 g of leucine, the amino acid that actually switches muscle building on. That is about 30 g of whey, 120 g of chicken breast, or four eggs. Arslan S, Clinical Nutrition ESPEN 2026
